That semi-circular feature, 155 miles (249 km) in diameter, is a large impact crater that has been flooded by the same basalts that filled the much larger Mare Imbrium to its east - forming a round bay on the western edge of the mare. On Monday night, May 29, the terminator on the waxing gibbous moon will bisect Sinus Iridum, the Bay of Rainbows. Thursday, May 18: Razor-thin moon with Mercury and Jupiter (before sunrise) Binoculars and backyard telescopes will show the event, but extra caution must be taken to avoid pointing optics anywhere near the sun. For all but the most westerly locations, the event will occur in daylight, making finding the moon and Jupiter a challenge. The times vary by location, so use an app like Starry Night to look up your own circumstances. Jupiter will emerge from behind the dark edge of the moon about 70 minutes later. PDT and 11:40 GMT, the orbital motion of the moon (green line) will cause the bright, leading edge of the moon to pass in front of, or occult, Jupiter for skywatchers located in northern Central America, the northern Caribbean, most of North America, Greenland, Iceland, Svalbard, the northern British Isles, Scandinavia, and northwest Russia. Observers viewing them from southerly latitudes will see them, and nearby Mercury, more easily. The annual Eta-Aquariids Meteor Shower is produced when Earth's orbit carries us through a cloud of particles left behind by repeated passages of Halley's Comet. Saturday, May 6: Eta-Aquariids meteor shower peak (pre-dawn) No part of this event will be visible in the Americas. For much of Africa the moon will rise while partially eclipsed. At greatest eclipse at 17:24:04 GMT, 97% of the moon's diameter will sit within the shadow. Observers in Asia, Southeast Asia, and Australia will see the moon begin to dip into the shadow at 15:13:39 GMT and move clear of it at 19:31:54 GMT. This full moon will pass through the Earth's penumbral shadow, very slightly dimming the northern part of the moon's disk. Other common names are the Full Milk Moon, Full Flower Moon, or Full Corn Planting Moon. The Cherokee call it Ahnisguti, the "the Planting Moon", when the fields are plowed and sown. The Cree of North America call it Athikipisim, the "the Frog Moon" - the time when frogs become active in ponds and swamps. For them, it signifies a time when Mother Earth again provides healing medicines. The indigenous Ojibwe groups of the Great Lakes region call the May full moon Zaagibagaa-giizis "Budding Moon" or Namebine-giizis, the "Sucker Moon". Full moons in May always shine in or near the stars of Libra or Scorpius. Starting several nights before the moon reaches its full phase, Copernicus exhibits heavily terraced edges (due to slumping), an extensive ejecta blanket outside the crater's rim, a complex central peak, and both smooth and rough terrain on the crater's floor.Īround the full moon, Copernicus' ray system, extending 500 miles (800 km) in all directions, becomes prominent. This 800 million-year-old impact scar is visible with unaided eyes and binoculars - but telescope views will reveal many more interesting aspects of lunar geology. Therefore, FEMA offers financial grants-up to 75 percent of the building cost-to qualified communities and schools to build safe rooms. Plus, there is immeasurable value in protecting lives. Federal grantsįEMA recognizes that it costs less money to build safe structures to withstand a disaster than to rebuild the same structures afterward. Essentially, you get a safe room for FREE. You can build a Monolithic Dome for the close to the same price as a regular building. To build a safe room using conventional techniques is going to cost more. This is a comparison against standard construction, not safe room level construction. There are now dozens of Monolithic Dome safe rooms across “tornado alley.” Two buildings for the price of oneĪ Monolithic Dome gymnasium, for example, costs about the same or less than a conventional structure. With only minor improvements-like installing impact-resistant doors and windows-a Monolithic Dome becomes a FEMA361 safe room. The FEMA guidelines are the basis of safe room building codes published by the International Code Council for construction of safe shelters ( ICC 500). The publication included safe room building standards plus instructions on preparing for a disaster and cleaning up afterward. In 2000, FEMA published FEMA P-361, Safe Rooms for Tornadoes Hurricanes, Guidance for Community and Residential Safe Rooms. “From 1950 through 2011, tornadoes caused about 5,600 fatalities in the United States, more than hurricanes and earthquakes combined over the same time period (NIST 2014).” “Compared with hurricanes and earthquakes, single tornado events typically affect smaller geographical areas but occur more often and cause more deaths,” reports FEMA. Doors, windows, and other openings must be hardened. Yes, it’s still incredibly safe inside and moving to an interior area helps, but when protecting a school full of students against an EF5 tornado, it’s not enough. Openings in the concrete shell for windows and doors are vulnerable to flying debris. In many ways, all Monolithic Domes are almost perfect safe rooms. The outer layer of polyurethane foam also buffers impacts and can capture flying debris. The spray-in-place concrete-or shotcrete-is much stronger than typical concrete. When an object strikes the wall, the forces are distributed across the entire structure. The steel-reinforced concrete wall is curved in all directions. Players move their marbles to form a “ladder” across the board so pieces can be jumped across the board in a single turn. The strategy in playing Chinese checkers is to get to the other side of the board quickly by maximizing jumping moves. Jumped marbles are not removed from the board like regular checkers. (Jumping – that’s where the checkers part comes in, right?) The player may continue to jump in any direction (except backwards) for as long as there are marbles in his path to jump. On a turn a player moves one marble to an adjacent empty hole or he may jump over any (even an opponent’s) single marble. When 3 players participate, player’s home bases are located at every other point on the star playing field. If there are only 2 players, each gets 15 marbles instead. Players get 10 marbles to fill their triangular home base. As you can see, the roots of Chinese checkers are wide, but not anciently deep! Ravensburger, a German game publisher, honed the game HALMA, invented around 1883 – 1884 by American, Dr. Pressman got the idea for HOP CHING CHECKERS from an earlier game published in Germany in 1892 called STERN-HALMA. You can go for the ' APE' preset if you want to 'lock off' all of the scale factors at the same quality, but I wouldn't. Marc W's prior explanation of the Spectral Reproduction content answers your question, and is an excellent read.
